Highlawn
The
magnificent cable-suspension bridge known as the East Huntington
Bridge towers across the Ohio River at the 31st Street Exit
near the 33rd Street border of Highlawn. Marshall University
borders 16th Street along the western border of the Highlawn
area.The Highlawn area is primarily a business and residential
area. The residential areas continue to be tree-lined and contain
a beautiful array of churches, homes and apartments. The public
schools in this part of the community includes Enslow Middle
School and Highlawn Elementary School. The beautiful and colorful
churches in the Highlawn area are abundant. More of the older
fine homes with their well-groomed lawns may be found in the
Highlawn neighborhood. Stylish homes and apartments are available
to fit any budget. A
large variety of businesses and medical facilities are located
throughout the area. Steel of West Virginia, located between
the Ohio River and Marshall University, has been making steel
since 1909. ACF Industries, Incorporated began in 1873 when
the city was incorporated and is still designing and developing
railroad cars for the railroad needs of today. BASF Wyandotte
Corporation, pigment manufacturers, began producing pigments
in 1912 and still conducts business all over the World.
Marshall University borders the Downtown area on Hal Greer Boulevard
and stretches from Hal Greer Boulevard to 21st Street between
Third and Seventh Avenues with main parking areas available
along the north side of Third Avenue. Marshall is 170 years
old and the second largest university in West Virginia. The
university currently enrolls approximately 16,000 students (enrollment
in 1907 was 1,000) with locations throughout West Virginia.
The Marshall Football Stadium and the Cam Henderson Center are
also stragetically located within the Marshall Campus area.
Huntington
is a regional center for medical care, serving patients from
all areas of the Tri-State. A large number of medical care services
and facilities reside in the Highlawn area-one being St. Mary's
Hospital. St.. Mary's Hospital began in 1924 with a 35-bed facility
(formerly the St. Edward's Preparatory College). Today St. Mary's
is approximately a 400-bed facility with training for medical
residents, nurses and radiology technicians. The hospital opened
their Outpatient Center in the summer of 1997. Other larger
medical care facilities in the Highlawn area include the Highlawn
Medical Center and the Tri-State Medical Center. Additional
attractions to the Highlawn area are the Veteran's Memorial
Fieldhouse, 29th Street Plaza and the Tri-State Ice Arena. The
Veteran's Memorial Field House, located on Fifth Avenue and
26th Street, is host to a wide variety of events and activities.
These range from concerts and circuses to weddings and wrestling
matches with everything in between. Area clubs and organizations
sponsor special events at the Fieldhouse . There is also a lighted
outdoor facility for baseball, soccer, etc. For dates and times
