South Side
Welcome
to one of the most scenic areas of our city. The Southside
is mainly a residential area with lots of scenery, tree-lined
streets with a many brick-paved streets, neighborhood businesses
and shops. The community is full of beautiful homes, churches
and upscale apartment complexes with well-groomed lawns. The
homes range from large luxuriously extravagant homes to the
smaller more modern homes. Apartment complexes and many duplexes
are scattered throughout the southside increasing the housing
options. Ritter
Park runs along 12th Avenue and 12th Street stretching
upward from the Southside area through the Southeast Hills area
filling its seventy acres with beautiful scenery, foliage and
recreational opportunities. The park has a beautiful fountain
(Right) with benches, a picnic shelter, amphitheater,
Rose Garden, the Room with a View, playground and a walking/jogging
trail. For
softball, baseball, soccer and football; the Prindle Field is
just a few blocks from Ritter Park. The field is located on
Charleston Avenue and 14th Street. Contact the Greater Huntington
Parks and Recreation District for additional information about
games and events-(304) 696-5954. There
are now two elementary schools, Cammack Elementary and Miller
Elementary, and one middle school, Cammack Middle School, in
the Southside area. The Huntington Renaissance Center, formerly
the old Huntington High School (left), is located between Ninth
and Tenth Avenues on Eighth Street. This building has been renovated
for multipurpose uses with the YMCA, childcare services, senior
citizen apartments, and more. The
other businesses and offices are varied but include medical
offices/centers, various community services and organizations
(such as employment services, senior citizens center, and the
Women's, Infants, and Children's program to name a few.), Convenience
stores, banks and restaurants are also readily available. (Photo
