Burning Inside City Limits

No burning inside city limits is allowed in accordance with city ordinance.  Please note that some Huntington addresses are not within city limits.  If you are unsure whether your address is inside city limits, contact us at (304) 696-5950 extension 4024 to determine if you are a city or county resident.  If it is determined (or if you already know) that your residence is in the county, then contact the Division of Forestry and/or your local fire department.  The Division of Forestry phone number is (304) 743-6254.

Knox Boxes

A Knox Box, known officially as the KNOX-BOX Rapid Entry System is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for firefighters to retrieve in emergencies so that they can quickly enter a building without having to force entry or find individual keys held in deposit at the station

How do I order a Knox Box?  You may order a Knox Box directly from the manufacturer by going online at www.knoxbox.com or calling 866-625-4563.  The City of Huntington Fire Department does NOT have to sign any paperwork for you to complete this transaction.

How do I determine the correct location for installing my Knox Box?  Obviously each residence or business is unique in its requirements and structural features, which makes it difficult to have a one-size-fits-all answer for this question.  If you need assistance in determining a location to install your Knox Box, then contact our Bureau of Fire Prevention at (304) 696-5960.

How do I have keys placed in my Knox Box?  Since the City of Huntington Fire Department retains the only key to unlock your Knox Box, it will be necessary for you to contact us to arrange a time to stop by your residence or business.  We do require the key holder to be present when we open the Knox Box to place new keys inside.  Please note if a key changes, we will also have to be called to unlock the Knox Box to replace the key(s) inside.  To arrange a time for us to provide this service to you, contact our Deputy Chiefs at (304) 696-5952.

Occupancy Permits

All permits for occupancy, which includes new and existing structures, can be applied for at the permit office in the basement of City Hall.  The permit office will then notify the Fire Marshal's office when your structure is ready to be inspected.
You can contact the permit office at this number: 304-696-5905 Ext: 0
