C.P.A.T
The
job of a firefighter is one of the most physically demanding jobs in
the
United States
.
It requires muscular strength and cardiopulmonary endurance. The Candidate Physical Ability Test
(CPAT) was developed to test fire fighter candidates on their
ability to perform simulated tasks consistent with the duties of a
fire fighter. The
test is designed to ensure that candidates possess the physical
ability to complete the critical and essential tasks of fire
fighting. The CPAT consists of eight separate events performed in a
continuous manor. During the entire test the candidate must wear a
50 lb. weighted vest (simulating the weight of a firefighter’s
protective clothing and equipment). The eight events are:
1)
Stair Climb (an additional 25 lb. will be added
to simulate the weight of tools)
2)
Ladder Raise and Extension
3)
Hose Drag
4)
Equipment Carry
5)
Forcible Entry
6)
Search
7)
Rescue
Drag
8)
Ceiling Breach & Pull
The CPAT is a pass/fail event. The CPAT must
be completed in 10 minutes 20 seconds (or less) with each event
completed correctly.
Preparing
for the CPAT
The CPAT simulates the
physically demanding tasks of fire fighting. As such,
successful completion of the CPAT requires a high degree of physical
fitness in the areas of aerobic and anaerobic power, muscular
strength and endurance, flexibility and balance. In order to
ensure successful completion of the CPAT all candidates should take
advantage of the Mentoring Program provided by the City of
Huntington Fire Department
.
During the Mentoring Program, candidates will view the CPAT
Orientation video, review the CPAT Orientation Guide, and will have
the opportunity to attend scheduled orientation and CPAT Timed
Trials prior to their scheduled test date. Candidates will also be
given the CPAT Candidate Preparation Guide which provides
information on how to physically prepare for the CPAT test.
