Qualifications for Firefighter

  • At least 18 years of age, no greater than 35 years of age at the time of application
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Be a citizen of the United States

Applications

When available, applications can be obtained through the City Clerk’s Office (Room 16) in City Hall.

Hiring Process

The City of Huntington Fire Department completes the testing for new employees at least every three years. The testing process consists of:

  • Written Examination – the written examination is utilized to determine the applicant’s ability to function as a firefighter. (Study Guides are available as applications are completed and returned to the City Clerk’s Office)
  • C.P.A.T. (Candidate Physical Abilities Test)  

An original appointment list is compiled from this testing process. New employees are hired from the original appointment list as positions become open. An applicant must also pass the following prior to a conditional offer of employment being made:

  • Background Investigation
  • Psychological Screening
  • Medical Exam (NFPA 1582)
