Established as a professional department in 1897, the Huntington Fire Department has a long rich heritage dating back to the 19th century. The department currently provides nine fully staffed companies with a compliment of support staff and apparatus responding from six stations strategically located fire stations throughout the city of approximately 51,475 people. The Huntington Fire Department is responsible for the fire protection of a myriad of diverse industries, schools, commercial businesses, transportation and residential structures and provides first responder emergency medical assistance.
Huntington is located on the Southern banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries, and is the river's largest port area. The fire department is capable of water rescue operations and is the host locality to the Regional # 6 West Virginia Regional Response Team which provides Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue Team responses.
The Huntington Fire Department holds a Class 2 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) and was the first department in the State to achieve this status. Last departmental evaluation was performed in 2010.
