Administration

The Huntington Fire Department serves an area of approximately 16 square miles in the second largest city in the state. The department answers approximately 3,424 calls for service each year from six strategically located stations with nine front-line apparatus (six engines, two aerial towers and a heavy rescue). A rescue boat and hazardous materials response unit are staffed when dispatched by multi-tasking personnel from the other companies and call-backs. Our department enjoys a sworn strength of 107 personnel operating on a three 24-hour shift platoon system to provide around-the-clock coverage and has established a three person minimum staffing level per apparatus. It is the goal of the Huntington Fire Department to meet the required staffing levels outlined in NFPA - 1710 (Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire Departments).

The Huntington Fire Department is led by the Fire Chief. The Fire Chief is tasked with running the administrative and operational divisions of the fire department. Fire Administration’s purpose is to work as a team to accomplish departmental goals and objectives while overseeing an annual budget of approximately $10.3 million. The fire department is comprised of the following Administrative and Operational Divisions:

Fire Administration handles all personnel matters and records, payroll, purchase requisitions, and budget requests and provides direction to the department.

The Deputy Chief - Administration is responsible for ensuring the fleet of apparatus and fire stations are properly maintained through repairs and preventative maintenance. The responsibilities include identifying the future needs of the department, as well as, acquisition of needed equipment and the oversight on repairs to existing equipment. This position also is responsible for direct supervision of Bureau Captains, Lieutenants and civilian personnel assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau, Logistics & Safety Bureau, and Training Bureau. Administration Division is managed by Deputy Chief Anthony Hazlett.

The Logistics & Safety Bureau is responsible for the health and safety, and general welfare of fire fighters through proper and timely maintenance of firefighting equipment, and training of personnel relating to departmental safety issues along with supporting the department’s safety needs. The Logistics & Safety Officer reviews firefighter injuries and accidents in an effort to improve safety department wide. The department Logistics and Safety Officer is also responsible for ensuring the department’s Safety Committee meets monthly to review and provide input to matters pertaining to the welfare of the department. The department Logistics and Safety Officer maintains all SCBA’s and records pertaining to mask fit testing, all radio maintenance issues, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for all departmental personnel. The Logistics & Safety Bureau is managed by Captain Randy Ellis.

The Training Bureau is responsible for entry level training as well as continuing education for all personnel based on fire service standards and emergency response demands within an environment that stresses quality instruction and the highest commitment to safety. We seek to enhance the skills of all personnel to better serve the fire department and the citizens of Huntington. The Training Officer has an Assistant Training Officer that is assigned to assist with the required training of department personnel. The Training Bureau is managed by Captain Jan K. Rader and Lieutenant Charley Shumaker.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for creating a safe environment for our residents and business community through public education, prevention programs, investigation and enforcement of codes/ordinances to prevent injury and loss of life and property. The Fire Prevention Bureau is managed by a Deputy Chief appointed by the Fire Chief as the Fire Marshal for the City of Huntington. There are three Captain positions assigned as Deputy Fire Marshals one for each 24 hour shift. The Prevention Bureau is managed by Deputy Chief Brian Grieco.

The Operations Division is comprised of the three Deputy Chiefs assigned as Shift Commanders to three 24 hours shifts and the associated 100 officers and firefighters that provide direct emergency response and fire protection to our citizens.
