One of the purposes of Law Enforcement Exploring is to expose the
police explorer to the wide variety of situations and
circumstances that police officers encounter every day.
However, many situations, due to the potential risk involved,
prevent the explorer from viewing or participating first hand.
In an attempt to give the explorers the chance to learn about
these sometimes-hazardous law enforcement duties, The Huntington
Police Explorers are offered a wide variety of training and
instruction. This includes such topics as self defense,
domestic violence intervention, traffic stops, crime scene processing,
juvenile laws, along with many others. Explorers are given
classroom instruction in these areas
and then they *become* the police officer and put their training into
action. Mock senarios are set up for the explorers and members of the
Huntington Police Department watch carefully as the members move through
each encounter using the skills they have been taught.
In these scenarios, the explorers must make the
determination of what course of action
to take, what laws, if any were broken
and ultimately, how to resolve the situation safely, legally and professionally.
The training the explorers receive serves several purposes. First, it further allows
the explorer to better understand what is involved in being a police officer.
Secondly, it can prove beneficial if the explorer decides to pursue a career in the
criminal justice field. Lastly, the explorers can use these skills in a number of law
enforcement explorer competitions that are held in various locations across the country.
