How do I obtain a Change of Use or Occupancy Permit?

All structures and buildings that will have a “change of use or occupancy” need to have a change of use permit issued ( International Building Code 2003 section 110). This provision of the code applies whenever a new business goes into an existing or new structure or there is a change of operator of the business. A review of the structure and location will be made by the zoning official, building inspectors, and the fire marshal to determine if the structure needs the appropriate codes for the intended use. Once this review is completed and the structure is found to be in compliance a change of use permit will be issued. The finance division will not issue a city business license until the building inspection division issues a “certificate of use and occupancy”. The cost of this permit is $15.00.
